Termites are the major wood-destroying structural pests in the southern United States. According to some estimates, over $2 billion are spent annually in the U.S. controlling or preventing termite infestations. In North Carolina, our main problem is with subterranean termites, i.e., termites that normally live below ground and may move up into a structure where they cause damage. Termites are "social insects"; they live in a nest or colony which is typically found underground, often near a tree, stump, wood pile or other source of 'food'.

Flea infestations are the most common parasite problem of dogs and cats in our area. Unfortunately, here in North Carolina there really is no end to flea season. The fleas can survive our winter, so it is necessary to use flea preventative year round. It is estimated that American pet owners spend over 500 million dollars each year on flea products most of which do not work! During the past few years much research has centered on studying the life cycle of the species of fleas that attack dogs and cats in an effort to develop better flea control methods.

Whether you're buying a home or simply refinancing, the lenders will most likely need a termite inspection or wood-destroying insect report. Our inspectors provide information not only on termites and other wood destroying insects, but also on wood rot, wood debris and moisture problems. To ensure a proper and thorough inspection, please have your attic, garage, storage room, and/or basement accessible. This means move any stored items to the center of the room away from the walls. The inspector will need to see every expansion joint (the areas between the slab and foundation wall).

All insects and rodents need moisture to survive. Subterranean termites will eat most hardwoods, but they must have moisture. Although they wander and can find moisture from other sources, they must have a food source which is why they are often found near a moisture source. Carpenter ants are also pests associated with moisture problems. They never nest in healthy dry wood. They will seek out a window sill that has been damp from a leak or an area near a water leak and nest there. Inspect your home and fix any leaks or moisture problems or contact a professional for a moisture control consultation.
