In choosing a fencing club it is important to find one that offers the right mix of services, a membership you feel comfortable with, and a coaching staff that can meet your needs. Any club can claim to be the biggest club, the club with the most electric strips, the club with the best fencers, etc.; any coach can claim to be the best coach based on his or her personal record as a competitor, or on how many champions the club has. So how do you sort through the claims? Salle Green is a Center of Excellence, recognized by the United States Fencing Coaches Association for the quality of its programs and its staff of nationally and internationally certified coaches.

Salle Green, and our associated centers, publishes a variety of manuals designed to help the instructor of modern, classical, and historical fencing. The first in a series of handbooks to help develop modern fencing trainers and to give them the tools for success. A handbook for beginning fencing coaches who hold the certification of Assistant Moniteur, or who are working to earn this certification of the United States Fencing Coaches Association, or anyone interested in learning to train fencers.

Our modern fencing program is the core fencing activity at Salle Green. Modern fencing is modern. It descends from the core concepts developed by the Medieval Masters and refined by their Renaissance and Enlightenment counterparts and took its modern shape in the classical period of the late 1800s to the start of World War II. However, like all modern sports it has been transformed by advances in understanding the functioning of the athlete's body, the development of modern methods of training, and the explosive growth in youth participation.

We use current forms of physical training and conditioning to ensure the athlete reaches his or her physical peak at the correct times for competition. Everyone who provides instruction at Salle Green is either a certified and internationally recognized professional or is in training for certification under the supervision of Maitre Green. All are members of the United States Fencing Coaches Association, the Intrenational Fencing Coaches Association, and/or the Classical Academy of Arms, and Coach Members of USA Fencing.

The United States Fencing Coaches Association Center of Excellence program recognizes fencing clubs, salles, and programs that meet a gold standard among places to learn to fence and to train for competition, that offer a full range of services to their members, and that commit and to a program of continual improvement in the services they offer. Centers of Excellence have internationally recognized, certified, professional coaching staffs led by a Moniteur, Prevot, or Maitre. Salle Green's coaching staff includes Maitre d'Armes Walter Green, Prevot d'Epee Mark Logan, and Assistant Moniteurs Fred Vegas, David Dimmett, Alex Stubblefield, and Evan Zook.

For over 800 years hardy men and women have stood up sword in hand to teach others how to fence. For over 130 years individual fencers have excelled in organized competition. And yet, for the most part, fencers today do not remember their names. Today, even the recent greats of American Fencing, including incomparable Masters such as Giorgio Santelli and Julio Martinez Castello, are forgotten by all but a handful of Veterans. We have started a Names To Know project on our Facebook and Twitter pages to remember these individuals.

Every year USA Fencing names high-school student athletes who maintain high grade point averages to the USA Fencing All Academic Team. We strongly support the All-Academic Team program, identify young athleteswith the potential to be selected, and encourage their academic success. We understand that student athletes have the challenge of being both successful in school and in sport, and that smart athletes have a high potential to be excellent athletes in college and to have enhanced opportunities for success in the work world.

USA Fencing, the national governing body for the sport, recognizes fencing clubs that have exemplified excellence to their membership and our sport. Recognizing clubs that work creatively to attract new fencers to our sport while retaining long-time members is a priority to USA Fencing. USA Fencing recognizes that, without the efforts of local clubs, stability and growth in the sport would not be possible. The Club of Excellence Program recognizes one club in the United States that exhibits outstanding commitment in each of five areas.

The environment is welcoming and the instruction is fantastic.

Went with a group of friends for the women's sports clinic and it was fantastic! Can't wait to get back.

Salle Green has been a wonderful choice for my husband's passion. Having 3 years into the school has improved his tactics and techniques, from all his.

There are four lessons for the fencing community from the President's COVID experience. (1) The President has access to the best medical care on the planet. Everyone he came in contact with was tested. In rallies he was widely separated from the mass of who were not socially distancing. And he caught COVID. (2) Testing is not a talisman. You have a negative test, 10 minutes after you are exposed, and you are off to the races. It is a snapshot in time. Testing is vital for your peace of...

So what did the Salle do for World Fencing Day - sent Maitre Green to a USA Fencing Zoom parafencing clinic (continuing tomorrow). Time well spent! Time well spent supporting our parafencing sisters and brothers in arms and getting ready to teach and train wheelchair and blind athletes when fencing returns.

If you missed Wednesday's Bladework class, you missed a good discussion of hand positions for guards and parries. Everyone came away with homework to reinforce 3 or 7 hand positions and, for the sabre fencers how to snap your fingers.
