At Habitat for Humanity of the Mississippi Gulf Coast, we believe opportunity is transformative and that by empowering people, lasting change can occur. Help us open many more doors across our community, encouraging strength, stability and self-reliance in every interaction we have. Volunteer opportunities continue to be suspended at this time. We will continue to monitor the situation and adjust as necessary. We thank you for continuing to support Habitat in helping to provide strength, stability and self-reliance.
What has HFHMGC learned from participating in the LEED program? Building "greener" houses isn't complicated. By making the commitment to build more efficient housing, HFHMGC has learned that spending a little bit of extra money up-front is quickly recouped by our homeowners through lower utility bills and fewer home maintenance issues. What does this mean for our future homeowners? The finished product is 40-50% more energy efficient than homes built to standard building codes, meaning lower electric and water bills for homeowners.
In 2012, Habitat for Humanity of the Mississippi Gulf Coast was awarded the Traveler's Fortified Build Grant through a pilot program with Habitat for Humanity International. The grant was awarded to various Habitat affiliates around the country to demonstrate that FORTIFIED standards can be successfully implemented by affordable homebuilders for a minimal cost increase. Since then, all new construction builds have been certified under the FORTIFIED Program. Devised by the Institute for Business and Home Safety (IBHS), FORTIFIED is a voluntary standard for both new and existing homes that guides builders and contractors to achieve above-code standards that offer superior protection to natural disasters.
