Mark & Buttons Chimney Sweepshad its beginning in late 1979 after both Mark and Buttons read an article in the magazine "Mother Earth News." The article talked about the ongoing oil crisis and the ensuing wood stove and wood heating craze, along with the need to have all those chimneys made clean and safe. Soon after the setup arrived, we set off to clean the chimneys of all our friends and neighbors to get our feet wet (or should I say, our hands and faces dirty!) Now Mark did have experience cleaning boilers on a Navy destroyer which had a lot of similarities to cleaning chimneys.
We employ Certified Chimney Sweeps' for our chimney service work. Every chimney cleaning includes a Level I safety inspection as dictated by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). This covers the clearance to combustible materials around all fireplaces, the condition of the venting system components (firebox, damper, smoke chamber, smoke shelf, and flue) and the condition of the outside chimney structure as well; whether it be a brick, stone, or pre-fab chimney. A full safety inspection report is written and a copy is left with the customer detailing the work performed and any recommendations or suggestions we have.
Chimneys requiring a "rebuild" will have the existing deteriorated portion of the chimney torn down to the roof-line (sometimes lower). The chimney is then rebuilt with new brick up to a height which meets code compliance.
