The Inspector Chris home inspection team has walked through a lot of residential homes and condos, plus apartment buildings over the years. We've seen plenty of DIY patches that make us shake our heads. We hope to provide bits of advice in this blog that you find practical and helpful. Some years back we did an inspection for a house. What started to be a normal inspection turned into an extreme warning call. The house had several CSST (corrugated stainless steel tubing) gas lines that were improperly installed.

A Second Look at Galvanized Water Pipes, Copper Drain Pipes, and Other Potential Problems. You're looking at the house of your dreams, and you make an offer. Your offer is accepted by the seller, and you order your inspection. The inspection is done and all is well. There are several items on a normal home inspection that can not be determined by the naked eye, here is a list of a few items I would consider having inspected during your home plumbing problems inspection. Main sewer lines are one of those things that can not be inspected by the naked eye, it is impossible to inspect the drain lines without ordering a sewer scope of them.

The causes of indoor air pollution vary from area to area, house to house and even room to room. Contaminated air seeps in from the outside air, but it also comes up from several other of indoor sources like construction materials, consumer products, mold, insects and pets. Poor ventilation can let it accumulate to dangerous levels which results in serious health risks, a problem that often spikes in fall and winter as we seal up buildings to conserve heat. Air is pushing on your skin right now with up to 15 pounds of pressure per square inch, a weight so light you can't even feel it.

Every year in the United States there are approximately 35,000 decks that collapse due to poor or improper construction. The most common problem we have seen in deck construction is the improper securing of the deck to the structure and the use of improper fasteners. Nails are not permitted to be used as fasteners on an exterior deck, due to the history of nails backing out causing the deck to become unstable. The North American Deck and Railing Association is an organization that specializes in decks only.

Many people do not realize that an inspection from a 3rd party (inspector you hire) will inspect the new construction home for defects during construction on an unbiased opinion. Average home owners are not aware that certain aspects of the home during construction are never inspected or even looked at during construction. The local county inspectors do not carry ladders and do not inspect the roof area of the home. Decks are not inspected either. Most county inspectors just look and see if items are in place and not to see if they are properly installed, such as nuts and washers on the sill plate securing the home to the foundation.

We hear all the time about the dangers of the scary invisible gas that is carbon monoxide, but there is another similar silent threat that is actually more of a problem. Radon is an invisible radioactive gas that seeps into homes through foundation cracks, basement floors, and slab homes. It causes 100 times more deaths than carbon monoxide poisoning, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Radon is emitted by underground sources of uranium and can reach harmful levels if trapped indoors.
