Contemporary Arts Museum Houston (CAMH) is a non-collecting institution dedicated to presenting the best and most exciting international, national, and regional art of our time. Founded in 1948, the Museum prides itself on presenting new art and documenting its role in modern life through exhibitions, lectures, original publications, and a variety of educational programs and events. CAMH occupies an iconic stainless steel building in the heart of the Houston Museum District. This highly recognizable building was designed for the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston by the award-winning architect Gunnar Birkerts and opened in 1972.
It's small but it's soul's on fire. I came to see the Performance | Body Archives: Bone Deep Memories with Urban Souls Dance Company, and was blown away by the quality of the artists as well as the amazing use of space. The museum became a stage, it's rails part of the dancers' expression, it's floors canvases of emotion. It was a moving performance in a place that couldn't have been more appropriate. The dancers trancended time. Gorgeous.
Cutting edge. Thought provoking. Funny. Diverse. Thoroughly enjoyable.
I am Deaf and uses American Sign Language (ASL) to communicate. I wish I saw this video before I attended the ASL tour yesterday. If I did, I would not have shown up. The person who "interpreted" (same person from the video above) was NOT qualified to interpret the tour. I only could last 5 minutes before I left the group to explore the museum on my own. I am VERY disappointed. I have already reached out to the Tour Programs Coordinator and I hope they will contact me soon to discuss how we can avoid this again to preserve our beautiful language and Deaf culture.
