Since 1952, Lake in the Hills has welcomed residents and businesses and provided a high quality of life. The Village offers exceptional services through our Police Department, Public Works Department, and Community Services Department. Residents are also served by excellent fire protection districts, municipal water service and sanitary districts, and refuse and recycling services. The Village's Recreation Division hosts a variety of programs designed for families and individuals throughout the year and the Properties Division maintains impeccable public spaces.
Lake in the Hills was once a small residential community where farms dotted the landscape. Paved streets and major highways have replaced dirt roads, but a few original farms and fieldstone foundations still stand as reminders of our past. In 1923, Federal Judge Walter J. La Buy started purchasing property around what is now Woods Creek Lake, the largest lake in the Village. He acquired 472 acres for his estate by 1926, and built five stucco houses for his children along the south side of Woods Creek Lake on Indian Trail.
Fire prevention and suppression services for the Village of Lake in the Hills are provided by three fire protection districts. They are not departments of the Village, but rather separate service districts with their own taxing authority. If you have questions as to which fire protection district services a specific location, please call the fire districts at the numbers listed below. The districts review development proposals to ensure that new developments meet all fire and life safety regulations and that street and building configurations provide acceptable access for their equipment.
