Recology Employees are providing an Essential Service to the City of Cupertino. City staff and the Recology team are working to prevent exposure to employees, customers, and the City while maintaining this service. Everyone who lives or works in Cupertino can help the climate and the environment by practicing the three R's: reduce, reuse and recycle. Limiting the amount of garbage that goes into landfills reduces greenhouse gas emissions, as well as air, water and soil pollution. It also helps minimize the use of resources to produce such items, as well as of the resources involved in transporting and handling them once they have become trash.

As you go about your daily life, the smallest actions can make a difference: walking instead of driving, planting a native tree, separating recyclables from trash, buying local produce and turning off unused lights, for example. Bigger actions might include: choosing an electric car, installing more efficient home insulation, purchasing energy-efficient appliances, replacing your lawn with drought-tolerant landscaping or installing a gray-water landscape irrigation system. Actions such as these add up to a healthier and more sustainable natural environment, enhancing our quality of life.

The following public services are provided to residents and, where applicable, to businesses in Cupertino by agencies or organizations other than the City of Cupertino. Some of the services are based on cooperative agreements with the City of Cupertino or contracts with the City of Cupertino. Animal Control: San Jose Animal Care and Services provides shelter and field services to residents of Cupertino, as well as to residents of San Jose, Los Gatos, Milpitas and Saratoga. Buses: Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) is an independent special district that provides bus, light rail and paratransit services throughout Santa Clara County, including the City of Cupertino.

Cupertino Safe Routes to School (SR2S) is a partnership program between City staff and community partners, who collaborate to advance the program's mission: to create a safer environment for students and families in Cupertino to travel to and from school actively. The City of Cupertino is committed to safeguarding community members of all ages as they navigate our diverse network of bikeways, roadways, and walkways. To ensure that we achieve this goal, we are actively working on expanding beyond the traditional infrastructure and enforcement approach to traffic safety.

Neighborhood Watch is a crime prevention program that enlists the active participation of residents in cooperation with law enforcement to reduce crime in their communities. It involves: neighbors getting to know each other and working together in a program of mutual assistance; citizens being trained to recognize and report suspicious activities in their neighborhoods; and implementation of crime prevention techniques such as home security, operation Identification, etc. To organize a Neighborhood Watch program in your neighborhood, you may contact Neighborhood Watch Coordinator, Steffanie Turini at 408.777.3177 or e-mail steffaniet@cupertino.org.
