Ecological landscape design- living landscapes- means working primarily with native plants to feed the pollinators and the greater food web. We add edible, herbal, and medicinal plants to nourish both human and wild inhabitants, while our old-world stonework visually anchors the garden with timeless beauty. Whether you want a DIY native plant starter garden, a complete landscape design, a new meadow, an outdoor living space such as a patio, or to restore your stream, meadow, or woodland, The Natural Garden is the Shenandoah Valley's source for living landscapes.
We are a design-and-build ecological landscaping company. This means we build what we design from start to finish. We work with you from your very first ideas through the complete design process-and then we build your dream into a reality. We also offer a range of garden maintenance services. To discuss a new project, please send an email containing the scope of your idea to projects@thenaturalgarden.net. One of our team members will get back to you to set up a consultation. We install every element of our designs including stone walls, stone paths, patios, steps, and many other hardscape features such as boulder outcroppings and permeable paving.
Guarantee applies only to plantings where our team has developed the soil, not to plants installed by clients. Some conditions apply. Not applicable to habitat packs. We build our stonework to last a lifetime and clients rarely have problems. If, after installation, you have any issues with your wall, steps, patio, or other dry-set stone, we will come out to repair the work at no cost assuming you haven't walked an elephant over it, driven over it, or dropped a bowling ball from your roof onto the patio.
One of our designers-Elise Lintelman, Karl Shank, or Jo Shipe-will work with you in multiple stages to create concept sketches, different options, and a final design. What can you expect during our design process? It all starts with an initial on-site consultation where our designer listens to your needs and dreams for your outdoor retreat and documents the starting point. Then there is a site analysis and survey which may include measuring, soil testing, and obtaining an official plat if available.
We use regionally sourced stone to build our walks, patios and walls. Using ancient methods, we lay stone without the need for mortar or concrete, which allows for better drainage. With dry set stone and brickwork, our design solutions marry the softness of earth and greenery with the strong backbone of hardscape. Our gallery shows examples of valley limestone, valley fieldstone, valley cobblestone, Pennsylvania bluestone, West Viriginia sandstone, brick, and permeable pavers. This pathway was constructed from two foot by three foot rectangles of Pennsylvania bluestone.
